Australian Animal Protection Society Op Shop

Harking back to a time when ‘op shops’ were simply charitable organisations raising money and not on a bargain hunter’s bus tour, The Australian Animal Protection Society (AAPS) Op Shop offers old school op shopping without the price tag.

You would be hard pressed to find a vacant space in the cramped confines of this op shop but don’t let its initial entrance mislead you. To the rear you will find a large selection of books, an impressive collection of old vinyl and enough crockery and glassware to overwhelm the most discerning of German pottery seeking shoppers.

It’s clear the volunteers in the store live and breathe the ethos of the AAPS and animal welfare. A selection of animal photos adorn the walls and on the day that we visit, we are introduced to Gilda and Staffy; two dogs from neighbouring shops who’ve quickly realised where the doggy treats are.

Manager Joan has been volunteering with the store for 30 years and says she has “seen it all” in this time. Customers include a handful of regulars and strangers off the street looking to nab their next bargain. If you can spare the time to rummage through the endless stream of boxes, crates and hidden nooks – you might just find one too.
