On the edges of Moorabbin’s industrial area is a local business making a different sort of machine. Cochranes Health and Fitness is a gym that aims to turn whoever walks through their doors into lean, mean machines through a combination of personal training and circuit workouts.

Previously a gym equipment showroom, owner Craig Phinn has transformed Cochranes Health and Fitness into a warehouse style training studio.

“We still make our own gear, but turning the space into a functional gym means we also use the space as a showroom where we can demonstrate how our gear works,” Phinn describes.

Originally a Londoner, Phinn borrowed inspiration from New York’s warehouse gyms for the fitout at Cochranes. There’s hip hop coming out of the speakers, street art on the walls and synthetic turf workout area upstairs.

Walking around the two-storey space, the most striking thing about Cochranes is a definite lack of blaring TVs, buzzing electronic machines and wall-to-wall mirrors. Whilst renovating the space in early 2014, Phinn set out to focus on offering a functional training gym. In layman’s terms, this means exercises that highlight movements to prepare the body for light to vigorous daily activities.

“All our gear is built in-house and we format our own circuit training sessions,” says Phinn. “Because we focus a lot on personal training, we’re able to be more flexible and adapt workouts to the different fitness goals clients come in with.”

At $19 for a half-hour personal training session, Phinn explains that the price point makes the gym accessible for a wider demographic.

“We get a lot of clients who have never been to a gym before and we’ve found that the open warehouse layout and flexible personal training programs make the experience less intimidating for new members.”

Open 24 hours a day, Cochranes Health and Fitness even gets fitness buffs coming in at 4am in the morning. Good thing then that the gym’s ground floor area also houses a corner cafe and coffee roaster by fellow local business Iyer Coffee Co.
