There’s nothing quite as iconic to Australia as a game of lawn bowls out on the greens on a sunny weekend day. And the Moorabbin Bowls Club is as iconic a venue as it gets.

This cosy and friendly club on South Road was established in 1954 and has since played a significant role in Moorabbin’s community life. The active members compete each year in competitions held by the Bowls Victoria Association, and are always looking to recruit new members to participate in both competitive games and social events.

“We welcome players of all ages and skill levels,” says club secretary Norman Foenander. “It’s our goal to look after the community, especially the senior community here in Moorabbin.”

Foenander adds that the club is staffed mainly by a group of volunteers made of members of the bowls club and are responsible for hosting the various games and social events that happen throughout the weekdays and games and tournaments on weekends.

“The managing committee takes pride in being a vital part of Moorabbin, this place has an incredible heritage and we hope this continues for many more years to come.”

On weekdays, groups of local seniors use the hall for social functions such as card games, indoor carpet bowls (on cold winter days), aerobics and other gatherings. The function room also comes fully equipped with a stocked bar, kitchen and plenty of seating and tables, and is available for hire by non-members of the club for private and community events.

Throughout winter, members flock in for social games every Saturday. Meanwhile in the summer months, locals are encouraged to invite family and friends for a friendly competition of barefoot bowls on Wednesday and Friday nights in this Moorabbin institution, complete with the occasional barbecue and beers from the bar.

So spend a day on the green with your mates and hang out in one of Moorabbin’s oldest community centres, maybe even get into a friendly competition with some of the long-time club members!
