Moorabbin Martial Arts

Who knew that Moorabbin boasts some of the most experienced martial arts masters in Australia?

Just down the road from the station, Shihan Eddie Emin has been running the Moorabbin Kyokushin Karate studio since 1999. Shihan Emin, whose Japanese title means Grandmaster, started his karate training in Tokyo, Japan in 1959. With over 50 years of experience, the 86-year-old Shihan Emin has achieved the 9th Dan (rank) of karate training and is one of the oldest and most respected Masters of Kyokushin Karate in Australia and is widely recognised for his contribution, development and teaching of the practice.

The Moorabbin Kyokushin Karate studio runs private training sessions as well as classes for a range of skill and fitness levels, ranging from beginner’s classes, weekend classes for children to women’s self-defence classes.

“Our focus is really on keeping fit and learning self-defence techniques,”Shihan Emin says. “With the beginners classes we start with very basic movements and we combine that with basic cardio training as well.”

Elsewhere in Moorabbin’s town centre, the Melbourne Taekwondo Centre runs classes through the week teaching students as young as five years old in the ‘Musketeers’groups, to experienced black belt students.

Part of a Melbourne-wide chain of Taekwondo training centres, the Moorabbin studio just across they Moorabbin train station is run by Head Instructor Bernard Victor, a multiple times state, national and international champion who in March 2014 completed his 6th Dan training. All students training at the Melbourne Taekwondo Centre start off learning the core blocking, striking and kicking skills which are then developed into more advanced techniques as students rise up the ranks.

Experienced instructors at the Taekwondo studio ensure that both beginners and advanced students are made to feel welcome and with classes catering to the young and old, you can finally learn to do those jabs and high kicks you’ve been trying to do properly.

So send the kids down to learn a few karate kicks and taekwondo tricks, or join in yourself and mix up the regular fitness regime while you learn a few self-defence techniques from Moorabbin’s martial arts masters.
